Master copy painting
For about 600 years the training method for representational painting has been by making a copy, using the visible structure of an existing work by a recognised master.
The end result is not to produce a forgery or even a finished derivative work, but to use the act of reproducing the technique decisions and to internalise them.
When you copy a masterpiece, the painter has already made all of the difficult choices. All you have to do is faithfully carry them out. Leaving out our usual choice level, our attention moves to the execution level, paint application, colour mixing, and edge handling. This results in much faster learning of technical skills. We will be using a comparator mirror to develop this area of study.
This class will be a small group limited to 8 students.

Matthew’s classes have helped to rekindle my artistic journey in oil painting. The demonstrations, tutoring and follow-up notes provided offer really practical insights on techniques, drawing both on Matthew’s experience and his research into the work of other artists.
The classes have increased my knowledge and confidence so that I can continue to develop as an artist. I am sure to return for more inspiration.
As a beginner I found the Absolute Beginners course with Matthew perfect for me. Matthew has taught me to observe light and how it affects what you are seeing in terms of shade, tone, texture etc. He also introduced me to various artists and art history. This has made trips to galleries more interesting and enjoyable.
Matthew’s class is a truly immersive experience, perfect for anyone who approaches art with a sense of trepidation, with the added bonus of a delightful studio that adds to the sense of retreat.The sessions not only build confidence, but enable you to tap into your innate creativity. In addition the course explores art per se, encouraging a new way of seeing. Thoroughly recommended!

Matthew’s Drawing classes have been inspirational I didn’t realise how much I was going to gain from all his teachings, which are far more than ’just a drawing class’, it’s more like a Foundation Course. Throughout this time I have seen so much more to looking and have found creative satisfaction through the experience of making a mark and each time, never quite knowing where this was going , but through Matthew’s encouragement, the confidence has grown to work with the uncertainty and to keep going.
